ArtWauk started in 2011 with the concept of breathing life into empty storefronts by letting artists and friends into the spaces to clean up then set up. This benefited both the artists and building owners, as new people would see the space as full of possibilities. (Picture from 2011 includes then Mayor Dan Drew with artists.)
Now, Downtown Waukegan becomes the cultural hub and envy of the North Shore on the third Saturday of every month. There are galleries and venues in the Arts & Entertainment District with classic and modern art. Art is generally for sale, but you are also welcome to view the art and often speak with the artist!
Several of the galleries and venues serve complimentary refreshments. If you are in the mood for something more satiating, all of the Downtown Waukegan restaurants are open for business and feature full bars, full menus and excellent staff.
With all of this, plus live theater – often in all three downtown locations – and live dance performances, ArtWauk is a CANNOT MISS event.
If you’d like to participate in ArtWauk, work directly with a local merchant. In the warmer months, set up a table in an open space and join the explosion of the cultural and visual arts!
