ArtWauk started in 2011 with the concept of breathing life into empty storefronts by letting artists and friends into the spaces to clean up then set up. This benefited both the artists and building owners, as new people would see the space as full of possibilities.
Now, Downtown Waukegan becomes the cultural hub of the North Shore on the third Saturday of every month. There are theatres, galleries and venues in the Arts & Entertainment District with visual and performing art. Visual art is generally for sale and you often have the opportunity to speak with the artist!
Several of the galleries and venues serve complimentary refreshments. If you are in the mood for something more satiating, Downtown Waukegan restaurants are open for business and feature full bars, full menus and excellent staff.
Each ArtWauk is unique with the Harbor and outdoor spaces engaged in the warmer months, and themed ArtWauk generally in the Fall. September features Ballet Folklorico Tayahua's Fiesta sin Frontera (Party without Borders)! October is ZombieWauk! December is HolidayWauk! Every so often May ArtWauk turns into StarWauk and August usually has a nod to one of Waukegan's favorite sons, Ray Bradbury, who's birthday is August 22nd. ArtWauk is a CANNOT MISS event.
If you’d like to participate in ArtWauk, work directly with a local venue. In warmer months, set up a table in an open space and join the explosion of the cultural. performing, and visual arts!
